Starting A Veteran-Owned Business
How To Start A Veteran-Owned Business
The first decisions for a veteran starting a company: offer, customer, structure, EIN, and license. Rules belong to the agencies that publish them.
Published 2026-11-03. Intent: Learn the first decisions, not a legal filing service. Confirm government rules on the linked official page before you apply, borrow, or certify.
Start With The Offer, Not The Logo
A veteran-owned business starts when you can say who pays you, what they buy, and how they decide. A name and a logo do not answer that. If the offer is still “anything for anyone,” the next filing will not make the company easier to sell.
Write the customer, the job, the service area, and the next step you want that person to take. The longer version of that work is on the startup guide.
Separate Service From Certification
Serving in the military does not by itself make the company a certified veteran-owned small business. Certification is a separate federal process run by the SBA. Read the current description on the SBA veterans page before you tell a buyer you are certified.
You can form a company and sell to private customers without that certification. Certification matters when you want the contracting status it describes. It is not a grant.
Use The Public Setup Steps
The SBA business guide lays out a public sequence for starting a firm. The IRS explains how to apply for an EIN. State licensing boards, not this website, decide whether your trade needs a license. Insurance requirements depend on the work and the contracts you sign.
Structure, EIN, And License
Choose a structure with a qualified tax or legal professional. This page will not tell you to form an LLC or a corporation. After the entity exists, the IRS EIN page is the place to request an employer identification number if you need one. Do not pay a third party for an EIN the IRS issues directly.
What This Article Does Not Do
It does not file your company, pull a license, or promise the first customer. If you want those decisions reviewed against your trade, use the assessment. Bring the offer and the state you will work in.
