Electrical
Electrical Contractor Growth For Veteran-Owned Companies
Panel upgrades, safety inspections, and commercial projects do not sell on the same clock as a no-power call. The company has to price and staff them differently.
This is business guidance, not electrical code advice and not a safety inspection. No promise of booked upgrades or commercial awards.

Challenges
Service Calls Hide The Upgrade And The Commercial Job.
A dead outlet is a today problem. A panel upgrade is a conversation, a permit, and an inspection. A commercial tenant improvement is a bid sitting next to the GC’s schedule. Owners who treat all three as “tickets” stay busy and do not know which one paid.
- The van is full of service calls, so upgrade estimates wait until the homeowner hired someone else.
- Permit fees and inspection failures are not in the price, then they come out of profit.
- Commercial bids are sent and not logged. You cannot tell which GCs award electrical packages.
- Apprentice and journeyman coverage is a guess until an inspection or a job site asks who is licensed.
Commercial bidding has more in common with construction projects than with a plumbing emergency. Keep the pipelines separate.
Startup and development
License First, Then The Work You Are Allowed To Pull A Permit For.
An electrical company starts with the license class, insurance, and a clear line between residential service and commercial. Development is a list of GCs and builders who will let you price a package, plus homeowners who need a panel or a charger and are not in a panic. Do not advertise commercial capability you cannot staff with a licensed person.
Entity, EIN, and insurance shopping are outlined on the startup guide. We will not tell you that a license will be approved.
Marketing
Different Pages For Panels, Safety Concerns, And Commercial Work.
A panel or EV-charger page should say what the visit includes, that a permit may be required, and how to ask for an estimate. A safety page should tell people with a burning smell or sparking device to call emergency services if they are in danger, and only then to call an electrician. Do not write copy that teaches someone to open a panel.
Commercial marketing is not a coupon. It is proof you can meet a schedule and a spec: a short description of tenant-improvement or ground-up work you have finished, and a way for a GC to send plans. General advertising rules are on the marketing page. We do not promise search position.
Lead generation
Service Tickets, Upgrade Estimates, And Commercial Invitations.
Three lists. Service: dispatched and closed the same day or the next. Upgrades: estimate out, permit assumed or not, follow-up date. Commercial: plans received, bid sent, awarded or lost, and which GC.
Illustration, not a client result. Fifteen panel estimates go out. Five are followed up within three days. Two are sold. The two sales are not “a 13 percent close rate” you should print on a truck. They are a sign that ten estimates were not worked. A commercial bid log with eight invitations and one award is a relationship metric, not a Google Ads metric. Use your own counts.
Customer acquisition cost belongs on the residential paid calls you can match to invoices. Do not average it with a commercial job a GC handed you. That hides an expensive service ad inside a referred project.
Local search
A Profile For An Electrical Contractor, Not A Handyman With A Meter.
Category: electrician. Hours: when a licensed person can actually respond. Service area: where you will pull a permit, not every ZIP in the state. Photos: panels and finished devices you installed, without a homeowner’s face unless you have permission. No stock photo of a sparking outlet presented as your call.
If you do commercial work, the website can say so. The Google profile should not pretend a service van is a design-build firm. Manage it at Google Business Profile. Rankings are not guaranteed. The public primer is Google’s SEO Starter Guide.
Pricing and estimating
Service Rates, Upgrade Allowances, And Commercial Takeoffs.
Troubleshooting is often time and materials after a diagnostic. A panel upgrade or charger should be a fixed scope: the panel or device, the labor, the permit fee, and what is excluded if the utility or the inspector requires more. Commercial estimates need a takeoff and a written exclusion list. “We’ll figure it out on site” is how extras become arguments.
Illustration, not a client result. A panel upgrade priced at $3,200 with $800 of materials, $1,200 of labor, and a $200 permit leaves $1,000 before the truck, the inspection revisit, and overhead. One failed inspection can spend the profit in labor. Put your permit fee and your labor in the blank. We do not publish a national panel price, and we do not tell you what to charge.
Operations
Licensed Coverage, Inspection Rework, And The Service Board.
You cannot sell more upgrades than licensed people can permit and inspect. Growth is a coverage question: who can pull the permit, who can be on the job, and what happens when an inspection fails.
- Keep a count of inspection failures and the labor they consumed. That is not new sales.
- Do not book commercial start dates you cannot staff without pulling the service techs off contracted maintenance.
- Safety gear and lockout habits are operational, not marketing copy. Do not ask this website how to work in a live panel.

FAQ
Electrical Contractor Questions
Is electrical work sold like a plumbing emergency?
Some service calls are urgent: a dead panel, a burning smell, no power. A lot of the profitable work is slower: panel upgrades, EV chargers, and commercial build-outs that wait on a permit and an inspection. If you staff and advertise only for emergencies, you will miss the planned work.
Do you give code advice or tell me a panel is safe?
No. We do not inspect panels, interpret the code, or tell a homeowner what is safe. That is a licensed electrician on site. This page is about running the company.
Should panel upgrades and service calls share one ad?
They can share a company, not a landing page. A homeowner adding a charger reads a different page from a restaurant with a tripped main. Mixing them makes the estimate vague.
How do commercial bids differ from residential service?
Commercial work is invited, scoped, and scheduled around other trades, closer to construction bidding. Residential service is dispatched. Track them in different lists or the close rate will lie.
What membership fits an electrical contractor?
Business Builder fits an owner who already has a mix of service and upgrades and needs the follow-up and the job mix cleaned up. Accelerator is for an agreed estimating or scheduling problem. Startup is before the license and the first truck are real.
