Growth and marketing
Business Growth & Marketing Services For Veteran-Owned Companies
Practical help for owners who need more of the right customers, a clearer view of revenue, and operations that can handle the work — especially in construction and home services.
No revenue, ranking, or lead guarantees. Numbers on this page are teaching examples, not client results. If you are still forming the company, use the startup guide.

The constraint
Why Veteran-Owned Businesses Struggle To Grow.
Most stalls are not a missing logo. The phone rings for the wrong jobs, estimates go out and never get a second call, or the crew is already two weeks behind when the ads turn on.
Construction and home-service companies feel this first. A roofing, HVAC, plumbing, or electrical company sells a visit and an estimate, not a product in a cart. If the owner is on the roof and also answering the phone, growth is a staffing problem wearing a marketing costume.
- Inquiries are not tagged, so nobody knows whether the Google listing, the website, or a referral produced the job.
- The close rate is a feeling. Without won-and-lost counts, ad spend gets judged by how busy the week felt.
- Price is copied from a competitor instead of from the cost of the crew, the materials, and the jobs you actually want.
- A second service or a second city starts before the first one has a follow-up habit.
The founder’s background includes ownership in construction, HVAC and plumbing, and an SEO consultancy. That is context for the advice, not a list of campaign results. Read it on the about page. This site does not publish client case studies.
Assessment
Business Growth Assessments.
The assessment answers four questions before anyone talks about ads: where customers come from, how many become paid jobs, what a typical job is worth, and whether you can deliver more work next month.
What To Bring
- The services you want more of, and the ones you want to stop quoting.
- How people contact you today: calls, forms, texts, and referrals.
- A rough count of estimates sent and jobs won in the last 90 days, even if it is on a notepad.
- The website and Google Business Profile addresses, if you have them.
Illustration, not a client result. An HVAC owner says “summer is busy.” The assessment asks how many of last month’s 60 calls were maintenance agreements versus one-time repairs, and how many estimates are still sitting uncalled. The answer changes the plan. A busy season is not the same as a tracked season.
The conversation is by phone or email from the contact page. It does not enroll you in a membership or launch a campaign.
Local search
Local SEO And Google Business Profile Strategies.
For a contractor, the Google Business Profile is often the first sales call. The practical work is accuracy and proof, not a trick for the map pack. Rankings are not promised.
- One primary category that matches the work you want, and secondary categories you can actually perform.
- A service area or address that matches where you are licensed and insured.
- The same name, phone, and site address on the profile, the website, and the truck.
- Photos of real jobs, with permission, instead of stock pictures of someone else’s crew.
- Replies to reviews that are specific and honest. Do not buy reviews.
Illustration, not a client result. A plumber’s profile says “handyman” and the site says “drain and water heater.” Callers ask for work the company does not want. Changing the category and the first line of the description is a listing fix. It is not a guarantee of more calls.
Manage the listing from Google Business Profile. Local pages for each real service area belong with the website work below, not as a pile of city names you do not serve.
Website search
Website SEO And Technical Audits.
A useful audit asks whether the right person can find the right service and contact you. It is a checklist, not a score we invent.
What We Look At
- Each money page names one service and one area, with a visible phone number.
- The page can be indexed, loads on a phone, and is not a duplicate of five city URLs with the same paragraph.
- Titles and headings match the searches a customer would type, such as “water heater replacement” rather than a slogan.
- Call and form tracking is installed before anyone judges whether SEO “worked.”
Google’s own starting point is the SEO Starter Guide. We do not promise a position in search results. Hands-on site work is scoped on the marketing page or in a membership, not assumed from reading this one.
Paid search
PPC And Google Ads Strategy.
Ads are a way to buy a measured test, not a way to skip the follow-up. Start with search terms a homeowner or a general contractor would use, and refuse the broad terms that produce tire-kickers.
- Conversion tracking for calls and forms before the budget goes up.
- Negatives for jobs you will not take, such as the wrong trade or the wrong county.
- A landing page that repeats the offer in the ad, with the phone number above the fold.
- A weekly read of search terms, cost, and jobs — not clicks alone.
Illustration, not a client result. If a roofing account spends $2,000 and those clicks produce 10 jobs you can tie to the ads, the acquisition cost for those jobs is $200. If the same $2,000 produces calls you cannot match to jobs, you do not have a cost yet. You have untracked spend. Use your invoices, not this example.
Campaigns are created in Google Ads. We do not guarantee a return. A campaign starts only after the scope and the tracking are written down.
Acquisition
Lead Generation And Customer Acquisition.
A lead is a person who asked for the work, with a source and a next step. A click is not a lead. A lead is not a customer until money changes hands.
Track Every Inquiry The Same Way
- Date, name, phone, source, service requested, and who owns the follow-up.
- Same-day contact, then a second touch if the estimate is still open.
- Outcome: won, lost, or not a fit. Lost is useful. Blank is not.
Illustration, not a client result. A remodeling company logs 40 inquiries in a month. Ten become signed jobs. The inquiry-to-job rate is 25 percent. If referrals convert at 40 percent and ads convert at 10 percent, the ads are not “bad” until you also know what those jobs were worth. The 40 and the 10 are a lesson in division. They are not our numbers and not a promise of yours.
Customer acquisition cost is marketing spend divided by the new customers that spend produced. Separate ad customers from referral customers or the cost looks better than the ads deserve. More on the handoff is in the lead handoff briefing.
Conversion
Website Conversion Rate Optimization.
For a contractor site, conversion usually means a call or a form from a person who needs the service you named. It is not a popup contest.
- The phone number is visible on a phone without scrolling past a stock photo.
- The form asks for the job, the city, and a way to reply. It does not ask for a life story.
- The page matches the ad or the listing. A water-heater ad should not land on a general homepage.
- Someone answers. A fast site with a full voicemail does not convert.
Illustration, not a client result. If 1,000 people reach a service page and 30 call or submit the form, the page conversion is 3 percent. Raising that to 4 percent would be 10 more inquiries, not 10 more jobs. Jobs still depend on the estimate and the follow-up. Again, these are round numbers for the definition, not a result.
Sales
Sales Pipeline And CRM Development.
A pipeline is a list of open opportunities with a stage and an owner. A CRM is the tool that holds that list. The tool is optional until the list falls apart in someone’s texts.
Stages That Match How A Trade Sells
- New inquiry.
- Contacted.
- Estimate sent.
- Won or lost, with a reason if you know it.
Sales performance is the movement between those stages: how many estimates went out, how many were followed up within two days, and how many became jobs. Review it monthly. Do not add a second ad channel because the first one “felt slow” while 15 estimates have no second call.
Illustration, not a client result. Twenty estimates are open. Five were contacted again. If the other 15 had no second touch, the sales problem is the follow-up, not the lack of a branded CRM. A shared sheet with those four stages is a pipeline. Software comes after the habit exists.
Profit
Pricing, Estimating, And Profitability.
More jobs at the wrong price shrink the company. An estimate should cover labor, materials, overhead, and a profit you can name. Revenue is not profit.
- Know the cost of the crew for a day before you discount to win a bid.
- Track which job types you close and which ones you win only when you are the cheapest.
- Separate a busy month from a profitable month. The second one has margin left after payroll and materials.
Illustration, not a client result. A $10,000 bathroom remodel with $7,000 of labor and materials leaves $3,000 before overhead. If the truck, insurance, and office take $2,000 of that, profit is $1,000, or 10 percent of the price. Change any of those figures and the lesson changes. Have a bookkeeper or CPA tie this to your books. We do not set your prices.
Delivery
Business Operations And Hiring.
Buy capacity before you buy a bigger ad budget. If the schedule is full, the next lead is a refund of attention you do not have.
- Count how many jobs a week the current crew can finish without the owner on every site.
- Decide whether the missing person is a lead tech, a helper, or someone to answer the phone and update the pipeline.
- Write what “done” means for a job so a new hire is not guessing.
Hiring, payroll, and classification are legal and tax decisions. Use a qualified professional for those. Coaching can help you choose which role to hire first. It does not replace that professional.
Illustration, not a client result. An electrical contractor has a three-week backlog and a missed-call rate he has never counted. The next hire may be the person who answers and books, not another truck. That is a capacity question. It is not a claim that a specific hire will raise revenue.
Scope
Expansion Into New Markets.
A new city or a new service is a second company until the first one is measured. Expand when the pipeline, the close rate, and the crew can absorb it — not because a neighboring county looks quiet.
- Confirm the license, insurance, and travel time before you publish the new area.
- Give the new market its own lead source tag so it does not hide inside the original numbers.
- Keep the offer narrow. “We now do everything” is harder to estimate, insure, and advertise.
The industries page lists the fields this consulting is built around. Adjacent work is a conversation, not an automatic yes.
Accountability
Monthly Business Advisory And Accountability.
A monthly review looks at the numbers you agreed to watch: inquiries by source, estimates sent, jobs won, acquisition cost where ads are running, and whether the schedule can take more. Then it names the next month’s short list.
That is advisory, not a report that revenue will rise. Missed follow-up and a full crew are both acceptable findings. Pretending the ads failed when nobody called the estimates back is not.
Cadence depends on the membership. The group workshop is once a month on Veteran Startup, twice a month on Business Builder, and every week on Business Accelerator. Builder also includes one private session a month. Accelerator includes two. Nothing bills until the scope is in writing.
First quarter
90-Day Business Growth Program.
A sequence for an operating company. Skip a step that does not apply. Day 90 is a review, not a promised revenue date.
Days 1–30
Baseline
Hold the assessment. List sources, open estimates, and a rough close rate. Confirm the Google Business Profile and the pages that match the work you want. Do not raise ad spend yet.
Days 31–60
Follow-Up And Offer
Install the pipeline stages. Answer inquiries the same day. Fix the service page or listing that contradicts the ads. Price one job type from cost, with your bookkeeper if the books are unclear.
Days 61–90
One Measured Test
Run or revise one channel you can tie to jobs. Read acquisition cost only where the jobs are identified. Decide whether the next constraint is marketing, estimating, or a hire. Then stop or continue on purpose.

FAQ
Questions Before You Spend On Growth.
Who is business growth and marketing help for?
Veteran-owned companies that already sell something and need more of the right customers, clearer revenue, tighter operations, or professional marketing guidance. If the company is not formed yet, use the startup guide first.
Do you guarantee more revenue, leads, or rankings?
No. We do not guarantee revenue, lead counts, map rankings, ad returns, or business success. The work is a plan, a measurement habit, and advice. The market still decides.
Is this only for construction and home services?
Those trades are where a lot of the practical marketing experience sits: calls, estimates, and crews. Transportation, logistics, and professional services use the same measurement habits with a different sales cycle. See the industries page if you are unsure it fits.
What happens in a business growth assessment?
A phone call or an email about where customers come from, how many become jobs, what an average job is worth, and whether the team can take more work. It does not enroll you, run ads, or promise a result.
How should a home-service company track leads?
Give every inquiry a source, a date, a status, and an outcome. Sources include the Google Business Profile, the website, ads, and referrals. Status moves from new, to contacted, to estimate sent, to won or lost. A shared sheet is enough until the volume justifies a CRM.
What is a useful conversion rate?
It is your count, not a number from someone else’s company. Divide jobs won by inquiries for that source. An illustration: 40 calls and 10 booked jobs is 25 percent. That is a teaching example, not a client result, and it is not a target we promise.
Will you lower my customer acquisition cost?
We can help you calculate it and stop spending on sources that do not produce jobs. We cannot promise a lower cost. Acquisition cost is ad and marketing spend divided by the customers that spend actually produced. A bookkeeper should tie that spend to the real invoices.
Do you manage Google Ads and the website?
Strategy is part of the growth work. Hands-on implementation is only what the written scope includes, usually inside Business Builder or Business Accelerator. This page does not start a campaign.
What is the 90-day growth program?
A planning sequence: baseline the numbers, fix the profile and the follow-up, then test one channel you can measure. It is not a promise that revenue is higher on day 90.
Which membership fits a company that is already operating?
Business Builder is the monthly plan aimed at marketing priorities and a growth roadmap. Business Accelerator adds closer working sessions. Veteran Startup is aimed at companies still forming. Enrollment starts on the contact page after the scope is written down.
